Deep Tissue Massage Therapy
At Life Force Chiropractic, we believe in the healing potential of deep tissue massage. This technique involves the use of firm pressure and slow strokes to reach deep layers of muscles and the connective tissues that surround those muscles. To initiate a deep tissue massage, our practitioners use light pressure to prepare the muscles. Subsequently, our skilled massage therapists apply deep pressure using their elbow, forearm, knuckles, and thumbs. This technique was developed by Therese Pfrimmer, a Canadian physiotherapist who was seeking a solution for her leg paralysis. She discovered that varying pressure intensities over deeper muscles and tissues gradually reversed her paralysis, leading to the development of deep tissue massage therapy.
The purpose of deep tissue massage is to provide relief from chronic pain affecting areas such as the neck, shoulders, legs, and both the upper and lower back. During a deep tissue massage, you may experience discomfort or even some pain. This is because the therapy aims to reach deep into your muscle tissues. However, if pain causes your body to tense up, it can make it harder for the therapist to reach the deeper muscle layers. At Life Force Chiropractic, we value your comfort and encourage open communication during the procedure. If you feel any pain, let your massage therapist know so that they can adjust their technique or further prep your muscles before continuing with the deep tissue manipulation.
How Deep Tissue Massage Differs From Other Massages
Deep tissue massage therapy, while it shares similarities with other forms of massage such as Swedish massage, is distinct in its purpose, focus areas, and the amount of pressure applied. While a Swedish massage typically involves lighter pressure and is more generalized, a deep tissue massage applies firm, slow strokes to penetrate the layers of muscles and eliminate any knots or adhesions causing pain and inflammation or disrupting circulation. It’s a more targeted approach, focusing on areas of chronic pain or tension. Our team is adept in both techniques, and we can suggest the ideal method that resonates with your health journey.
Deep Tissue Massage in the Context of Chiropractic Care
Life Force Chiropractic views deep tissue massage as a vital component of our holistic approach to patient care. We recognize that many health issues stem from musculoskeletal problems, and deep tissue massage can play a crucial role in treating these conditions. By helping to relieve chronic patterns of tension, stimulate circulation for improved healing, enhance flexibility, and improve posture, deep tissue massage can complement our chiropractic treatments. Our goal is not only to alleviate your pain but also to address the root cause of your health issues. Through our personalized approach and the use of specialized techniques like the Torque Release Technique, we strive to guide you on a path to optimal health.
The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage
Physical Health Benefits
One of the primary benefits of deep tissue massage therapy is its effectiveness in relieving pain. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain in the neck, shoulders, legs, or the upper and lower back, this type of massage can provide significant relief. Another notable benefit is its role in lowering blood pressure. Studies have shown that people who receive a deep tissue massage for 45 to 60 minutes can experience a significant dip in their blood pressure readings. For this reason, it may form part of a holistic approach to treating hypertension. Furthermore, deep tissue massage therapy can help break up scarred tissues that sometimes form following an injury or surgery. By applying pressure, our therapists can break up these bands of painful tissues and realign tissue fibers, promoting better healing and recovery.
Mental Health Benefits
Deep tissue massage therapy isn’t just beneficial for physical health; it’s also a powerful tool for promoting mental well-being. The process can stimulate an increase in the production of oxytocin, a hormone that promotes positive emotions such as trust, empathy, and bonding. Furthermore, by indulging in the soothing strokes of a deep tissue massage, there can be a significant decrease in the levels of cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. This therapeutic method can be instrumental in reducing physical pain and tension, which often go hand-in-hand with mental stress and anxiety, contributing to an improved overall sense of well-being.
Benefits for Athletes
Athletes often push their bodies to the limit, which can result in muscle strain, injury, and chronic pain. Deep tissue massage therapy offers a respite to hard-working muscles, aiding in the alleviation of discomfort and enhancing recovery times. Unique benefits for athletes include:
- Promoting Quicker Recovery: Intense training can lead to the accumulation of waste products in muscle tissues. Deep tissue massage helps to eliminate these toxins, facilitating a quicker recovery.
- Reducing Injury Risk: Regular deep tissue massages can increase flexibility and reduce muscle tension, which in turn decreases the likelihood of sports-related injuries.
- Enhancing Performance: Improved circulation and muscle condition through massage can result in better athletic performance. Increased blood flow ensures that muscles receive more oxygen and nutrients, which can lead to improved strength and endurance.
Our team at Life Force Chiropractic is well-versed in the intricacies of athlete care. We’ve honed our deep tissue massage approaches to meet the demanding needs of those who regularly engage in sports or vigorous physical occupations, providing tailored support that caters to each individual’s rehabilitation journey and performance goals.
Long-Term Benefits of Regular Deep Tissue Massage
Regular deep tissue massage therapy can provide several long-term benefits. Due to the pressure applied during the massage, toxins that have accumulated in the muscle fibers can be flushed out of the body. This detoxification process can contribute to overall health and well-being. Another significant long-term benefit is the relief it can provide for those suffering from arthritis. Stiffness, limited joint movement, pain, and muscle tension can all be reduced with regular deep tissue massage. At Life Force Chiropractic, we are committed to helping our patients achieve long-term health benefits. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or looking to enhance your athletic performance, we can develop a regular deep tissue massage plan tailored to your needs.
Deep Tissue Massage Techniques
Basic Techniques Used in Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage utilizes a variety of techniques to reach the underlying layers of muscles and connective tissues. One of the basic techniques involves the use of firm pressure and slow strokes to penetrate deep into the muscles. Our massage therapists may apply this pressure using various parts of their body, like their elbow, forearm, knuckles, and thumbs. The process often begins with light pressure to warm up and prepare the muscles, which is then followed by deeper, more focused pressure to target areas of tension or pain. These targeted techniques are designed specifically to break up adhesions, also known as knots, which can cause pain and inflammation, ultimately promoting better circulation and overall muscle health.
The Role of Pressure in Deep Tissue Massage
Pressure is the secret sauce in the recipe of deep tissue massage. Imagine the therapist’s hands, strong yet mindful, gliding with purpose, their pressure reaching the buried chapters of your muscle’s story. It’s not about bulldozing through the tissue; it’s a tailored dance between force and feeling, a negotiation of layers till the deepest ones nod in relief. At Life Force Chiropractic, we champion a symphony of signals between you and your therapist during this deep tissue dialogue. If an ouch slips out or you feel the grip of discomfort, wave the flag – we’re here to calibrate that pressure to the golden mean where healing happens without the harrow. After all, whispering to the muscles with adept fingers to coax out knots and adhesions while keeping you draped in comfort is what spins the magic of true deep tissue transformation.
Advanced Techniques and Their Specific Uses
In addition to the basic techniques, our therapists at Life Force Chiropractic also utilize advanced techniques in deep tissue massage, depending on the specific needs of the patient. One such technique is ‘stripping,’ where the therapist applies a gliding pressure along the fibers of your muscles using their thumbs, knuckles, forearms, or elbows. Another technique is ‘friction,’ where pressure is applied across the grain of the muscles to realign tissue fibers and release any areas of rigid tissue that cause discomfort. These advanced techniques serve to enhance the effectiveness of the massage, helping to relieve chronic tension, stimulate circulation, and improve flexibility.
Safety Measures During Deep Tissue Massage
While deep tissue massage therapy can be a pathway to relief and recovery for many, it’s essential to tread this path with caution. Certain individuals may find themselves on ground that is more precarious than restorative. Those with conditions such as blood clots or recent major medical interventions – including surgeries, radiation treatment, or chemotherapy – should first seek the guidance of a physician before booking a deep tissue massage. This precaution also extends to those with osteoporosis or any similar condition that renders bones more fragile and susceptible to fractures.
It is equally important to highlight areas that must remain untouched by the firm hands of massage – bruises, inflamed rashes, unhealed wounds, or areas with tumors are strictly off-bounds. For the expectant whisperers of new life, pregnant women, the recommendation is to explore the gentler, nurturing embrace of pregnancy massage therapy, but always with the nod of approval from their doctor.
In adherence to our heartfelt commitment to patient wellness and safety, these protocols are woven into the fabric of care provided by our team at Life Force Chiropractic.

Frequently Asked Questions
No, it is extremely important to complete a full health consultation, spinal assessment, and any needed diagnostic x-rays prior to any adjustments in our office. This allows our doctors a chance to best understand your current health status and health goals to ensure they can help you before they begin delivering chiropractic adjustments. The consultation, assessments, and any needed x-rays are the pieces of information our doctors need to determine the timeline and frequency of care they would recommend for you if they determine our office can best help you.
This is a loaded question with many variables, as every patient is different depending on factors such as: age, previous health history, past traumas, current health concerns, health goals, lifestyle choices, amount of stress you experience, willingness to commit to your appointments, willingness to complete given stretches/exercises at home, etc. In all individuals, healing takes time and repetition but how much time and repetition depends on the factors listed above. Our first two visits with a patient allow our team to collect the necessary information to provide the most accurate timeline possible for optimal healing based on that individual person and their needs.
Visit frequency and timeline for corrective or wellness care are determined based on a detailed health history consultation to establish the patient’s current needs and future health/lifestyle goals. We have seen patients as frequently as 3x/week and as seldom as every other week, depending on the consultation, assessments, and x-ray findings. The first two visits in our office allow our team and doctors to collect the necessary information to provide the most accurate care plan for your specific needs and desires for care.
There are different service fees for different phases of care whether a patient is in corrective care or wellness care. Corrective care is a higher cost in the beginning, as more services are often needed to create desired results and optimal healing based on the initial health consultation, assessments, and x-rays. Wellness care is less costly, as these patients are choosing a lifestyle difference by receiving chiropractic care for overall well-being and prevention. Wellness care cannot be received until corrective care is complete, as corrective care is when patients are typically symptomatic and many have never seen a chiropractor before. The initial visit in our office allows our team to collect the necessary information to determine if and how we can best help your current health needs and desires, as well as identify if the patient needs corrective care or wellness care. The initial visit in our office is $97 which includes the report of findings at the second visit from what the doctors found from the initial visit and your specific care plan needs in our office (corrective or wellness, number of adjustments, frequency of care, needed at home instructions, progress re-exams, etc.). Adjustment costs range from $24-$70 depending on the amount of time the doctor will need to spend with the patient to make the needed adjustments and largely depending on the patient’s phase of care (corrective care is more costly than wellness care because more is needed from the doctor to make the desired health changes with the patient). Progress exams and x-rays are services our patients receive throughout the course of their care (corrective or wellness) to ensure they are continuing to heal and adapt at the highest levels with the best frequency and at-home recommendations. Progress exams and x-rays vary in costs depending on the specific service needed as they range from $35-$70.
Our office accepts most major insurances including (Medicare Part B, BlueCross BlueShield, Providence, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Insurances in the First Choice and American Specialty Health Networks, and a long list of others that typically fall under the supervision of one of the insurances listed above). There are a few insurance companies that we know we are not contracted with including: Humana, Apple Health, and Kaiser (unless it is supervised by First Choice Health). We are contracted with Molina, but only receive authorization for specific patients depending on many variables that are established by the insurance company including: patient findings and diagnosis, patient needs for care services, age of the patient, distance the patient lives from our office and how many other contracted providers are within that area, etc. Insurance companies all have specific plans and policies, chosen by the patient, therefore every individual is different when it comes to their personal costs, responsibilities and covered services within our office. Insurance can be helpful to decrease overall costs, but does not cover 100% of care. Therefore, we provide a complimentary benefits check of each patient’s insurance after we have completed the initial appointment in our office (detailed health consultation, spinal assessment, and any needed diagnostic x-rays) in order to provide all needed information to the insurance company for the most accurate benefit details and coverage specifically within our office. This allows us to provide all financial information, including services covered by insurances during our second visit when we present the patient with our doctor’s findings and recommendations for care in our office.
Depending on the patient’s health consultation, age of the patient, and specific case, our doctors will determine the specific x-rays needed to make the best recommendations for the person’s needs. X-Rays allow our doctors to see the overall curvature or loss of, if there is any degeneration present or loss of disc spaces between the spinal vertebrae. If x-rays are determined necessary, our doctors take a special series called the 4-View Motion Study to help identify the exact number of subluxations and lack of spinal motion that creates many health concerns.
The first two visits last 30-45 minutes in total. Then, most appointments last 15 minutes, as the adjustment itself only requires 3-4 minutes of time to find and correct the vertebral subluxation that creates nervous system dysfunction within the patient’s body.

Yes, we have worked with numerous patients following their car accidents. There are a few details that the patient must provide in order for our office to properly serve an auto accident patient to ensure the auto insurance company covers the care the patient needs.
